putting or converting apple tv containers to ipad

Hi
I just got my iPad today. am trying to watch movies that I converted to an apple tv container thru import mehod 4 on my iPad. it transfers to it well enough but cant be played. I figure since the iPad doesn't have the necessary codecs in it it wont play. how can I convert these files to the correct format for the ipad to read. bare in mind I don't have the original files anymore, i only have the ones obtained thru method 4.
